“The Michigan Attorney General’s office yesterday announced it
has started legal action against DoubleClick, saying the Internet
advertising company and two of its Web sites have violated
Michigan consumer protection laws by failing to disclose to users
that it is implanting data on their hard drives that can be used to
compile user profiles.”

“The issue revolves around DoubleClick’s use of
‘cookies,’
or data that a Web site leaves on a user’s computer

next time the user visits.”

is compiling personal user profiles that could be linked with a
consumer’s name, address and e-mail account.”
