“A virus scanner doesn’t do you any good if it’s not
somewhere along the path the virus takes to get into your network,
onto your machine, and then executed. When deploying antivirus
software, there are a number of factors to consider….”
“Antivirus software should be loaded onto workstations when
possible, especially for mobile users with laptops. Consideration
should also be given to purchasing antivirus software for people
that telecommute from home. Even if you do not load antivirus onto
corporate desktops it is extremely important to load it onto users’
home machines. The reason for this is that home machines will be
accessing the Internet and are probably not protected by any form
of antivirus software at the ISP’s end.”
“Another obvious place to filter for viruses is on your
mailserver(s). Currently, email is one of the best infection
vectors for viruses since the spread of a virus via email can take
place in several hours and hit many thousands of email systems and
hundreds of thousands if not millions of email clients. The
majority of text based email clients for Linux are relatively
secure, although pine has had some issues in thpast. GUI mailers
such as Netscape support Java and JavaScript, making them
vulnerable to email borne viruses. The language and scripting
support in other mail clients varies.”
