SF Gate: Court to reconsider ruling on encryption sales

transmitted on the Internet is a top priority for high-tech
companies, but the government bars them from using the best
encryption devices available.”

“In May, a three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal
ruled that encryption programs and the mathematical formulas used
to write them could not be suppressed by the government because
they contain expressions of ideas.

“But on Thursday, a majority of the full court’s 21 active
judges agreed to grant a new hearing to the Justice
Department…”
