“Although beneficial to the on-line consumer, Amazon.com’s
1-Click technology has caused quite a stir in the e-commerce
market. So much that the e-tailer’s enforcement of its 1-Click
patent has led Richard Stallman, an early developer of the Linux
operating system and an advocate of the free-software movement, to
urge a boycott of the company.

“Back in September, Amazon.com was granted a patent for 1-Click,
a system that stores billing and shipping information so that
repeat customers can avoid complicated checkout processes. In
October, Amazon.com filed a complaint against barnesandnoble.com,
alleging that the rival e-tailer infringed on its patent. Then,
earlier this month, Amazon.com was granted a preliminary injunction
protecting its 1-Click technology from barnesandnoble.com’s Express
Lane checkout service.”
