Computer Business Review: The Open Source Storage Holy Grail

“‘Storage is one of the last pillars of proprietary technology,
and it is about to fall. Historically, walls have circled the
storage arena… they have served as technical barriers separating
vendor from vendor, hardware from software, and fabric from
machinery.’ So said Jim Stallings, IBM’s VP of intellectual
property and standards at the launch of an open source software
programme for the storage sector, in October this year.

“Judging by the rhetoric, the event could have been the collapse
of the Berlin Wall in 1989. But the location was instead the
somewhat less historic headquarters of IBM in Armonk, New York. IBM
nonetheless hopes to bring walls tumbling down with the Aperi open
source programme it unveiled that day…”
