Computerworld: BMC Brings Big Iron Management to the Masses

“In a bid to help mainframe-dependent companies protect their
big iron investments, BMC Software Inc. is rolling out software
that will simplify and automate management processes for a wider
audience of IT professionals.

“The Houston-based maker of business management applications on
Monday plans to announce the System Advisor for z/OS, the first of
a line of Java-based products designed to make it possible for
nonmainframe specialists to manage mainframe resources. The System
Advisor suite will, for example, allow network or Unix specialists
to run systems through a simplified graphical user interface that
uses text messages to help users configure and run application
service management operations.

“The mainframe continues to play a role in IT, with new products
based around Linux and IBM’s WebSphere Web platform, as well as
business applications from companies like SAP AG and Siebel Systems
Inc, according to Calvin Guidry, vice president and general manager
of enterprise systems management at BMC. But managing mainframes is
becoming a more difficult task as companies face a shortage of big
