“Linux received its fair share of attention at this year’s PC
Expo….”
“Compaq representative Doug Emmons discussed Web sites and
technical support programs the vendor put in place to help its
solution providers unearth opportunities in the Linux space. “We’ve
gotten 40 million hits and 40,000 registrants on our site
already,” said Emmons. “We’re trying to make it as easy as
possible for our [customers] to port to Linux.” Compaq also offers
a portal for Linux material, AlphaServer Linux support and a
Solutions Alliance for partnering, porting and testing.”
“Other panelists discussed the cost-effectiveness and ease of
use of Linux applications. “Almost every desktop user needs a word
processor, spreadsheet, browser and e-mail. You have all that
available with Linux,” said Kit Cosper of VA Linux Systems.
“There’s absolutely no argument for not using this OS.”
