“Kristine has attended many trade shows, but this was her
first computer show. She is an above-average computer user and
understands how Linux fits into the scheme of things. So her
perspective on the events were of interest to me. It was
comforting to hear that her impressions basically echoed mine.
LinuxWorld Expo is an important event. I have tried to portray this
feeling to others, but unless one attends, it is difficult to
understand why LinuxWorld Expo is unlike any other trade show.”
“On first look, LinuxWorld Expo leaves no doubt that it is an
exciting, happening place. Both the crowd and the exhibitors are
very young. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy going with just
enough of a business-like topsoil to give it some legitimacy with
the suits. But just underneath, as Kristine said, it would be a
great place to research the Geek Look. There is an other-worldly
feeling to the affair….”
“In my opinion, the most important news at the LinuxWorld Expo
was that IBM released the source code for their industrial strength
journalling file system. IBM doesn’t seem to care if their system
catches root, but like one seed of a handful cast into a furrow,
they want it to become part of the mix. To my thinking, what makes
this important is neither the gesture of good will nor the concern
it shows for enterprise-level mass storage. What’s most important
about it is what it says about what has changed.”
