LinuxPlanet: VERITAS: Then and Now

“The name VERITAS has a familiar ring to most people in the
computing world, even if they can’t quite remember why. After all,
VERITAS is no startup. It’s been around since 1989, and is probably
best known for its backup and storage management products. However,
if you’re an enterprise-level company that is moving seriously to
Linux, VERITAS has a heavy commitment to this operating system. So
much so that I was personally amazed to see how much of their
product line is available on Linux.

“Just as interesting is the story of how they got to where they
are now. A bit of history before we get into specifics. Queue up
the background music, maestro.

“When asked if they thought they would support Linux so strongly
two years ago, the answer from the folks at VERITAS was a definite
‘No.’ Back then the dot com boom was in full force. Companies were
spending like money was water, and there was no solution too
expensive if they considered it the technically best solution
possible. Most IT departments at the time carried excess capacity
to minimize their risk. As the team put it in a group interview,
‘VERITAS enterprise customers were solidly focused on how to
achieve greater levels of availability and performance from their
heterogeneous, multi-platform environments–that rarely included
Linux.’
