Conectiva is participating in the development of Free
Software projects related to High Availability, a much needed
characteristic for corporations that depend on information systems
for their business.

“The increase of the availability of a system aims at keeping
services running, be them network, storage or processing services,
even in the event of system failure. A system’s availability is
expressed by a number which represents the probability that this
system will be up and ready for operation at a determined instant
of time. It can be defined, although a bit oversimplified, by the
ratio between a system’s uptime and its corresponding lifetime.
High Availability projects try to make this ratio the closest
possible to 100% by minimizing downtime.”

“Corporations must have their systems available 24 hours a day
throughout the years, and HA solutions can be applied so that the
amount of time lost in system outages is minimum. High Availability
is generally necessary in enterprise computing environments that
just can’t have their services down, such as banks, hospitals,
Internet servers, specialized database and file servers, among
others.”
