“At http://www.extra.research.philips.com/euprojects/storit/
you can read the home page of the STORit project.

The STORit project investigates end-to-end solutions for the
delivery of multimedia services to end-users involving the
combination of a broadband delivery channel such as DVB, lower
bandwidth connections such as internet and affordable local mass
storage at the users home. The project will focus on two
application areas: digital television and remote learning.

When you make the choises Public Deliverables and Deliverable 8
(Oct99) you will reach the page

,
where is dealed with the software aspects. There is stated :

The STORit box was implemented under the Linux operating
system because of its superior multi-tasking capabilities,
relatively easy device driver development for our custom-made
hardware, and easy access to low-level PC internals. These are
exactly the features that have enabled us to build a TV Anytime
prototype in a relatively short time.
