but Jon “Maddog” Hall practices his own hybrid of rock and religion
— singing the praises of Linux and spreading the gospel of open
source.

“And on Thursday, he brought his message to PC Expo 2000 in New
York, delivering a keynote address detailing the spread of Linux
and spiced with anecdotes about how he’s seen it deployed.”

“Hall knows Linux. He’s worked at Compaq’s Unix unit and at Bell
Laboratories. He’s executive director of Linux International, an
association funded by VA Linux (stock: LNUX). And over the years,
he’s been able to catalog the metamorphosis of Linux from a
little-known open-source program with a following of hobbyists to a
powerhouse OS adopted by the corporate mainstream for such
computing-intensive tasks as clustering.”
