Linux’s push into the datacentre will soon begin in earnest
with the publication of designs for high-availability open-source
clustering.

“Project leader Stephen Tweedie of RedHat said that Phase Two
Clustering — which will also enable symmetric multiprocessing
(SMP) and high-performance clusters scaling to tens of thousands of
nodes — seeks to provide the architecture for new
high-availability Linux projects. Tweedie has taken the
well-documented VAX Clusters — now Compaq VMS Clusters — as his
model. All work will be available as open source and will be
hardware-independent.”
