“Linux will account for about a quarter of worldwide server
appliance sales by 2003, Dataquest said.”

“It estimates Linux servers will account for $3.8 billion, or 24
percent, of the worldwide server appliance revenue by 2003. By
volume, that represents 14 percent, or 1.1 million units.”

“The predictions underpin the growing acceptance of the Linux
operating system, which is available free on the Internet, within
the computer industry. Red Hat Software, a closely held maker of
Linux, has received investments from Compaq Computer, IBM, and
Oracle. In an internal memo last November, Microsoft described
Linux as posing a ‘significant’ revenue threat to its Windows NT
system.”
