We’re now seven years into the new millennium, and I am slowly becoming resolved to the fact that the flying cars of the future are simply not going to spontaneously appear anytime soon.
Darn it.
On the other hand, Windows XP is almost as old as the 21 Century, and I’m still seeing how to tips for XP in major online publications. What’s the deal with that?
Today is a case in point: while gathering news for the post-holiday crunch, I happened to notice a tiny little text banner on one of Matt Asay’s blog entries. The banner was simply a link to a TechRepublic article on how to “Use these four Registry tweaks to accelerate Windows XP.”
To be very fair, the linked article is an excerpt from the 2005 O’Reilly book Windows XP Hacks, 2nd Edition, and I can’t tell when the article was actually created, because there’s no dateline, and I don’t feel like registering with TechRepublic to find out.
It’s 2008, folks. Don’t you think Windows users know how to upgrade XP by now? More tellingly, why does CNET (the host of Asay’s blog) see the need to link to an old XP help article when Vista has been out nearly a year?
The obvious answer is that CNET is paying attention, and they know that a vast majority of their Windows guests are coming in from XP clients, not Vista. We are four weeks shy of the one-year anniversary of Vista, mind you.
Mountain out of a molehill? Oh, I will be the first to admit it. File this under “little things that amuse Brian for no particular reason.”
