“Earlier I reviewed Corel’s downloadable Linux distribution,
Corel Linux. The conclusion was that Corel Linux was a solid
product for those new to the Linux platform and used to an
operating system such as Windows or MacOS. The Deluxe version
adds a number of extra applications, including WordPerfect, making
it more attractive and useful for a new Linux user coming from a
different platform. This review will go over the added
features of the deluxe version….”
“The Deluxe version of Corel Linux includes Netscape
Communicator (instead of the Navigator that came with the
downloadable version). The main difference is that Communicator can
be used to read email and newsgroups, but it does help add some
extra functionality. The other major addition is Corel WordPerfect
8.0, which adds a needed piece of software to the distribution.
Corel has even included a copy of the WordPerfect Users’s manual,
which is just as good as the user’s manual for Corel Linux Deluxe
itself. On the driver side, the inclusion of a registered copy of
the OSS sound drivers allowed the software to work perfectly on the
Compaq Armada 1750 I tried, which fixed one complaint I had with
the downloadable version of the software. The OSS drivers included
in Corel Linux Deluxe are the commercial version, as opposed to the
OSS-Free drivers which can be freely downloaded from 4Front Tech’s
website. I found the version included with the software to have
much better support than the free version.”
