“The other day at Comdex, Mr. McNealy stated in front of yet
another crowd, that ” If you go from Capitalism to the Commune,
where there are no trademark and property rights, you can’t
guarantee Write Once Deploy Everywhere…” Well, neither can Sun’s
Community License Lawyering Party, obviously.”
“Uh, I have a question at this point…… when was the last
time anyone subverted the GNU, Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD or NetBSD,
Python, Perl, Apache or PHP3 source code to any detrimental
effect? In case you are wondering, I listed software covered
under a couple of different versions of what people call “open
source” and none of them are written strictly for profit.”
“The fact that virtually the entire internet runs on a
combination of those platforms/languages/scripting tools is
conveniently ignored. In fact, there are tens of thousands of
developers using those very tools to make excellent money writing
software at state of the art capitalist ventures (like his own….)
is lost on Mr. McNealy, it seems. Write once and deploy everywhere,
indeed.”
