BSD Today: Using LyX to create a book

“In my earlier article, I introduced LyX and provided a
brief explanation of how it worked. In this article I’ll present
examples on using LyX to create a document containing chapters, a
table of contents, a bibliography, and footnotes.

I’ve chosen to use some material in the FreeBSD Handbook from
the FreeBSD.org site for the example chapters and paragraphs. This
lets me devote most of this article to LyX commands instead of
telling you what to type. For this exercise, we’ll replicate the
information from chapters 15 through 18 in Part III of the
handbook.

After starting LyX, select ‘New’ from the ‘File’ menu. Type
‘freebsdbook’ for the filename and click the OK button. (Different
versions of LyX may not prompt for a filename.) Click on the
‘Layout’ menu item and select ‘Document’. Change the document’s
class from article to book and answer ‘Yes’ when asked if you want
to set some parameters to those of the selected class. Then click
on the OK button to close the document layout window.”
