“A Swedish-born Linux database dubbed MySQL is being used as
part of an overall freeware combination that may put E-commerce in
reach for small and midsize users. In the process, it is generating
services for VARs and other solution providers.”
“New dot.coms are seeing Linux and MySQL as a cost-effective
and scalable way to start,” said Tim Ash, chief executive of
Future Focus Inc., a San Diego database reseller specializing in
launching E-commerce sites. While Future Focus sells and supports
databases from Oracle Corp. and Sybase Inc., it also is garnering
revenue from MySQL installations, Ash said.”
“MySQL is a multiuser, multithreaded SQL database server.
MySQL’s development dates back to 1979, by the T.c.X software
consortium in Sweden. An initial version of the database was given
limited release in May 1996. MySQL 3.11.1 was released in October
1996 on Sun Solaris. A month later a Linux version debuted.”
