Japan Today: Microsoft to Promote Open-Source Software in Japan

“Microsoft Corp has decided to promote open-source operating
systems in Japan to cooperate with an electronic government
project, company officials said Wednesday.

“The move by the U.S. software giant in effect marks a
turnaround in Microsoft’s policy on marketing its Windows software,
whose source code has as so far been kept secret…

“Microsoft said it will push ahead in Japan with its ‘Shared
Source Initiative’ already started overseas, under which open
source software is provided to governments, universities and
companies under individual contracts…”
