“The Java Community Process (JCP) has been working closely with
the Apache Software Foundation to update the Java Specification
Participation Agreement (JSPA) to enhance the relationship between
the JCP and the open source community. Sun has proposed changes to
the JSPA based on Apache’s feedback, and both organizations last
week agreed in principle on those changes. A detailed letter of
intent has been posted at www.jcp.org that outlines the
agreement.“Proposed are significant changes to the JSPA to enable open
source implementations, no-cost access to test compatibility kits
(TCKs) for qualified nonprofits and individuals, and a scholarship
program to cover access to Sun’s support services for those who
wish to run the TCKs. As a gesture of goodwill, Sun will modify
current Java Specification Requests (JSRs) to reflect the proposed
open source compatible JSPA and over time similarly change the
licenses of previously completed JSRs…”
