“Linux 2.2 is tentatively scheduled to be a Christmas release,
but its a given fact that any new release of a product (a ‘.0’
release) will be initially less stable than older trees. Unlike
other vendors there will be no forced upgrade path. The 2.0.x tree
will continue to be maintained for a long while yet. The 2.0.37
release will probably occur after 2.2 has been released, and new
releases every 6 months or so from then onwards.”
