Merlin Software Technologies opened the gates some four
weeks ago to “a piece of the action–“stock options and monetary
remuneration for software contributions to its products under a
development license called “Option Source.
” Merlin would
retain reselling rights of projects developed under this license,
while the developer would retain ownership of his creation and the
right to sell it elsewhere.”

“Merlin, a developer and distributor of Linux-based
applications, set the program up to “give back cash and stock for
good projects,” said Alastair King, Option Source project
coordinator. “The [monetary] remuneration is pretty minimal,” said
King. “But the stock options are illustrating investiture in the
Open Source community.”

“Two weeks after its introduction, Option Source already had the
completed application forms of 25 developers, to be reviewed by
Merlin. “All the developers that applied may not be accepted,” King
said, “but this is a good response from developers even though it
represents a small percent of the Open Source community.”
