“If you’ve never played some variant of SimCity on any kind of
computer, then you’re probably not a gamer. The classic version was
the epitome of software toys-the kind of game that you keep playing
and playing and playing, over and over again, finding it virtually
impossible to pull yourself away. Thanks to the boys and girls at
Loki Games, Linux fans now have a chance to play the latest
variant, SimCity 3000 Unlimited.”
“For those of you living under a rock the last decade, the
premise of SimCity 3000 Unlimited is remarkably simple-build a
city, get people to come live in it, get them to buy stuff, make
places for them to work and play, and then tax them to death.
Sounds easy to you? Tell that to New York Mayor Rudolph
Giulliani-he d probably laugh in your face….”
“Like all of Loki’s ports, the Linux version of SimCity 3000
Unlimited is a perfect port of the Windows version. Unfortunately,
Loki did such a good job doing the port that it shares all the
weaknesses of the Windows version, namely that it’s not a
particularly responsive game. We installed all 600 megabytes of the
game on a fairly powerful PC-an 800MHz Athlon with 512MB of RAM, a
64MB nVidia GeForce 2 with XFree86 3.3.6-and found the game play
extremely slow. So slow, in fact, that we thought someone had
replaced our bleeding-edge PC with a 286-based machine.”
