NeoPlanet has announced that they are eager to contribute to
developing Open Instant Messaging and Chat (OIMC) in Mozilla.
Speaking for NeoPlanet, Michael J. Noe wrote on the newsgroup
netscape.public.mozilla.general: “we want to step in and lead this
project.”
Noe further stated,”the chat control should be able to operate
as a stand alone component, like the Gecko Browsing engine. It
should… use as many components from Mozilla as necessary, and be
fully integrated into the Mozilla source.”
In the NeoPlanet vision of the Mozilla Open Instant Messaging
and Chat control interface, “Internally there should be support for
multiple, simultaneous ‘Chat & Instant Messaging Engines’ or
ChIMEs. Each ChIME would speak to a specific external system, such
as IRC. The OIMC would aggregate the userlists, instant messages,
and chat sessions from all it’s active ChIMEs into one programmatic
interface. Ideally the OIMC would be able to act as a server
itself, so that chat’s among users of divergent systems could be
involved in a chat transparently.”
NeoPlanet was one of the first integrators of Mozilla into a
consumer product.
