“Magellan, like Evolution, is a complete PIM–but for KDE,
instead of GNOME. Magellan recently reached Milestone 1 (or
Pre-Alpha-1) status, and is behind Evolution in actual
functionality. TheKompany.com of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.,
started development of Magellan. The result of that relationship is
a little vague, but has ended in two versions of the Magellan code
base. The first code base is put out by the kAlliance team. The
other code base is still under active development with
theKompany.com. The project over at theKompany is named
Aethera.”
“Magellan looks very much like Microsoft Outlook with a Qualcomm
Eudora feel to it. … Magellan will support local mailboxes, POP3,
and IMAP when it is complete. … The IMAP protocol uses encrypted
authentication and provides server-based e-mail access. In other
words, when you connect with IMAP, you are working on the server.
… So, no matter where you are, if you have access to an IMAP
client, you can retrieve your e-mail and stay productive.”
“Magellan shows promise for providing a complete messaging
infrastructure. This will include a collaboration server with
calendaring and shared folder access (very much like Microsoft
Exchange, but without the license, stability, and security
hassles). If you are unhappy with the state of Magellan
development, look at Aethera from theKompany.com. I believe that
its version of the Magellan code base will be developed
faster.”
