“Java’s promise of cross-platform portability gained more
credibility this week, as vendors announced plans to build Java
virtual machines for two increasingly popular operating
systems.
“IBM Corp. released the alpha version of a Java virtual machine
for Linux, while Sun Microsystems Inc. and 3Com Corp. announced
plans to integrate Sun’s Java technology with 3Com’s
handheld-computing platform, Palm OS.
“IBM announced this week that it has quietly released an alpha
version of Linux Developer Kit for Java.”
