“SCO has created a workgroup-class application server for
Unix and Windows systems based on its Tarantella Enterprise II.
Named the Tarantella Express, this smaller model supports the same
connectivity features as its bigger brother, but supports a limited
number of users.”
“Tarantella, an application server that runs on a Unix server,
acts as an intermediary between the client station and the host
server systems. The Tarantella application server communicates with
the client using SCO’s Adaptive Internet Protocol (AIP); the host
servers use either the X Window protocol or Microsoft Remote
Desktop Protocol (RDP). That assures compatibility with existing
platforms, and the user can access any native Windows or Unix
application on the supported host servers, displayed through a
browser-based interface.”
“This structure, in fact, is the realization of the network and
thin-client computing model: the client machine simply runs a
display application, while the actual application processing occurs
on the host servers.”
