“The release of Windows 2000 may prompt IT managers to
rethink their desktop strategies and include more thin clients and
server-based computing models in their environments, analysts
and vendors said.
Each Windows 2000 license has inherent with it a multi-user
Windows-access capability, and Microsoft is providing a
client-access license so customers can begin using it in that mode
of operation.
IBM, among others, is banking on that newly embedded feature to
stimulate the already-growing market for thin clients, said Paul
Boulay, IBM program director, marketing thin clients, personal
systems group. To seize the opportunity, the Armonk, N.Y.-based
hardware, software, and services vendor is taking two proactive
steps in advance of the Feb. 17 formal launch of Win 2000.”
