Upside: Cobalt looks to applications for growth

UpsideToday reporter Sam Williams talks with Stephen
DeWitt, CEO of Cobalt Networks….

“UT: Why would a service provider want a device focused on one
task?”

“SW: You have to look at the emerging economics. Go back to the
cable analogy. You typically spend $30 to 40 a month on basic cable
service, $70 to 100 for special services. We’re finding that the
whole server marketplace is moving toward this “consumerized”
revenue model, and servers have to find a way to fit in that
model….”

“Where Cobalt fits in is that we do all the tuning and
integration work at the point of sale. Because the operating system
is open source, we have the ability to do that. And because our
platform is integrated with the application, service providers
simply plug that appliance into their network when they need the
application.”
