Ximian GNOME 1.4 and Red Carpet 1.0 will be released on Tuesday,
April 24, according to company officials.
Ximian GNOME 1.4, which is based on the recently released GNOME
1.4, offers a number of great, new features including file
management functionality with Eazel’s Nautilus, Red Carpet 1.0, the
next-generation in software updating and installation, MonkeyTalk,
a community chat and support network and GNOME Doorman, a
wizard-like application that hand-holds the user through the
process of configuring their desktop.
Red Carpet 1.0 is Ximian’s aforementioned updater/install
tool–it enables users to update software on their computers with
just one click. Red Carpet solves the software management problem
on Linux and UNIX desktops by untangling complex software
dependencies. It enables users to install and upgrade software from
a large pool of 3rd party applications and eliminates the need to
remember multiple commands.
Red Carpet is not expressly tied to Ximian GNOME: it can be used
separately.
