AsiaBizTech: Japanese Research Institute to Introduce Commercial Linux Supercomputer

“The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Japan (Riken)
recently introduced a clustered parallel supercomputer based on the
Linux operating system.”

This is the first case in Japan in which a Linux
supercomputer was installed on a commercial basis. The introduced
system uses the platform of Compaq Alpha Beowulf cluster from
Compaq Computer Corp.

“Riken will use this new giant Linux system specifically for a
molecule dynamics simulation. The system was sold by Compaq
together with Sunmisho Electronics Co., Ltd. and Itochu
Techno-Science Corp. The value of the order was not announced.”
