SearchEnterpriseLinux: BigStorage CEO speaks on largest Linux storage deal

In this interview with searchEnterpriseLinux, BigStorage chief
executive officer Sam Bogoch said what was widely reported as the
largest Linux storage deal ever will prove once and for all open
source systems are a fully capable and ready to handle enterprise
storage needs.”

searchEnterpriseLinux: What are the
advantages of working with storage on Linux over other
platforms?

Bogoch: The really big advantage, from a
storage standpoint, of Linux is the degree of innovation that is
going on with the platform, specifically with file systems.

With most platforms, you’re dealing with a legacy file system
that’s been around awhile. Whatever it does, it does, and it’s not
going to change much. That’s especially true, for instance, with
Solaris. … The traditional operating system vendor – and I put
Microsoft in the same category by the way – comes out with NT, and
it has NTFS, and they think that ought to be good enough.
Period.”

searchEnterpriseLinux: How did you get
involved with EMusic?

Bogoch: We actually met the EMusic folks at the
LinuxWorld conference. That’s when they first told us about their
requirements. It was pretty ambitious sounding, and basically they
needed a lot of storage for a very high capacity requirement. Yet,
at the same time they were quite cost-conscious. The idea of doing
it gold-plated with something like an EMC RAID would not have been
economical.”

searchEnterpriseLinux: Would it have helped to
have the new 2.4 kernel before the EMusic installation?

Bogoch: Definitely. For that matter, we still
consider 2.4 to be barely out the door here, but yes, we feel
strongly that once 2.4 gets a little more mature, probably over the
next 60 days, it will make a huge difference just in terms of
solidity of these kinds of systems.”
