NEC Solutions has become the first Japanese company to join
the IA-64 Linux Project – an international association of computing
companies that is developing the Linux operating system on Intel’s
IA-64 processors.

“In the future, Intel computer processors based on the IA-64
architecture will aim to provide computer servers and workstations
with higher levels of performance and functionality.”

“Targeted for production in mid-2000, Intel Itanium processors
will be the first IA-64 processors. The IA-64 Linux Project is
working to port the Linux operating system to the new processors so
that developers can build applications and software that take
advantage of the new processors.”

“Naturally, the Linux port will be available to the open source
community.”
