7 cool Linux projects

“When you use your Linux machine every day, it’s easy to forget
that there’s a world of experimentation, creativity and fun lurking
behind the package manager. In our biased opinion, Linux is the
best possible operating system for those who like to play with new
software. There’s so much variety, and unlike most software on
other operating systems, it’s all completely free.

“The only problem – if you can call it that – is that there’s
too much choice, and it’s often difficult to sort the wheat from
the chaff in the bewildering number of applications that are
available.

“We want to provide a starting point for fun hackery, a
distraction and a reason to enjoy using Linux. We’ve come up with
seven small projects that can be completed in just an hour or two,
on whichever distribution you prefer. They’ll take you from running
Linux as a server hosting your own photos, creating and recording a
podcast or a piece of music, stop-frame animation with Gimp and
even writing your own text adventure game. They’re a great example
of the breadth and quality of software you can now install on your
Linux box, and often the perfect starting point for bigger and
better things.”
