“No one knows more about the Linux operating system than its
creator, Linus Torvalds, and the founder of the largest Linux
company, Bob Young of Red Hat. So I tracked them down at Comdex and
asked them to answer your questions for you.”
“Q U E S T I O N: How are you planning to prevent the “Big Guys”
(IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Compaq/DEC, Sun) from adding their own
features to Linux and causing incompatibilities among different
vendors’ products?”
“A N S W E R: “I really don’t think there’s a problem there,”
says Linux creator Torvalds. “A lot of these so-called big guys in
particular have been burned by operating systems in the past. Just
look at what happen to (IBM’s) OS/2. Nobody wants to touch
operating systems. Everybody is so damned happy that somebody else
is doing it!”
