Accessing the Raspberry Pi Serial Console from Linux

My Raspberry Pi arrived this week and now I’m ready to dig into this diminutive computer and see what’s going on inside, but I have a slight problem. The Pi has only HDMI and composite for video output and I don’t have a display handy which can accept either of these. So I figured out how to access the Pi’s serial console from Linux and wrote up the resulting process.
