“Metro Link, known among Linux enthusiasts for their commercial
X servers, is making more and more moves in the embedded Linux
space as evidenced by a partnership with Home Systems Plus (HSP),
producers of the Aegis Home Management System (HMS). The Aegis HMS
allows users to check their home and control security, heating,
lighting, sprinklers, and garage doors from any device in their
home.”

“At the upcoming CES, Metro Link will demonstrate their
EnableWorks connecting the Aegis HMS to a Transmeta residential
gateway, running a Crusoe microprocessor and embedded Linux.”

“UPnP, originally developed by Microsoft, has been growing in
popularity as a “smart device” protocol. Intel has backed UPnP, and
recently made a SDK available for Linux developers. UPnP is in use
in at least one Intel appliance project, and it’s believed that the
protocol may eventually extend from traditional computing devices
and information appliances to more common domestic appliances such
as refrigerators and ovens.”
