“Wednesday was “one step forward, one step back” day for
‘net-enabled embedded Linux as 3Com announced its exit from the
appliance market (and, consequently, the death of the Kerbango
Internet radio), and the New Internet Computer Company announced
the release of a second generation of hardware for its New Internet
Computer (NIC) (pictured below) to go with its recently-released
2.0 software.”

“3Com’s withdrawal from the market, as reported by CNET/Yahoo!,
is the result of the company’s belief that ‘net appliances are
going to cause heavy short-term losses:”

“While we believe in the potential of the category, it’s clear
that it will take longer to develop than originally planned and
likely to generate losses for the foreseeable future,” said 3Com
Chief Executive Bruce Claflin.”
