AllLinuxDevices: The Linux-Based Yopy PDA: A Mighty Multimedia Mite?

“The Yopy is a Linux-based PDA being developed by G.Mate and
scheduled for distribution by Korea’s Samsung. A release date
hasn’t been set for the device yet, but several sites devoted to
covering the product and developing for it have already sprung up.

“If 3Com’s Palms are currently noteworthy because of their quiet
elegance and minimalism, the Yopy is distinguished by its sheer
multimedia power: it’s able to play MP3’s, MPEG movies, record
voice and video, and it also features an embedded web browser,
e-mail, and the ability to work with wireless phones and modems.
Samsung has also announced that it will include a dictionary, text
editor, and all the basic features most of us expect from a PDA,
such as a calendar and addressbook. According to the G.Mate web
site, the Yopy will not only run Linux, it will provide direct
Linux support for the sync operation typical among PDA’s.”

“The entire package is powered by a 206MHz ARM RISC
microprocessor, has 32 MB of RAM and features a 4 inch TFT LCD
touch screen capable of showing up to 65,536 colors at 240×320. It
also includes 3D Audio, a Compact Flash slot (with support for
digital cameras, t.v. tuners, and other devices), IrDA, and both
USB and standard serial ports.”

“While there’s plenty here to make a garden-variety gadget
freak quiver, Yopy’s big draw for many in the Linux community is
its use of Linux and the lightweight W Window System (not related
to X’s predecessor), which will open it up for the sort of hacking
we’ve all come to expect on our desktops.“
