Apple Insider: Apple QuickTime 4.0 rumored to become Open Source

Web-zine say an announcement that QuickTime 4.0 server is
open-source will be made by Apple Interim CEO Steve Jobs at
MACWORLD Expo January 4-8, 1999 in San Francisco.

An open-source QuickTime server will make possible its
deployment on Linux.

QuickTime 4.0 will support live streaming content according to
the Apple Insider.

“QuickTime Streaming will support unicast (a single viewer per
stream) as well as multicast (multiple viewers per stream) content,
and will also support a number of popular streaming protocols.
Streaming QuickTime media can be viewed on the client end from any
QuickTime savvy application.”
