ARF Net Services: Linux makes inroads into Windows/Unix territory

The Windows and Unix monopoly in the client-server
operating system business is officially under siege from Linux,
according to IDC.

“In 1998 the open-source operating system accounted for an
estimated 16 per cent of PC-server operating systems worldwide,
according to figures released yesterday by the analyst firm.”

“In Australia IDC has found 3.3 per cent of PC servers now run
on Linux, a figure set to grow over the next 12 months to 4.3 per
cent.”

“According to PC industry analyst Mr Graham Penn, from IDC
Australia, Linux was especially prevalent on no-brand PC servers.
“Where budget is a prime issue, penetration is much higher,” he
said.”
