Australian IT: Open Source Battle Hots Up

“Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory. The only thing better
than hearing one is concocting a scurrilous story and watching it
bounce around.

“Perhaps this was what an IBM executive had in mind the other
day when he stood on a Queensland stage to declare ‘a Redmond
company’ (Microsoft) as the mastermind behind a $US3 billion ($4.6
billion) lawsuit his company faces from SCO Group, which alleges
copyright breaches in the Linux code.

“Al Zollar said there was a ‘set of forces’ at work to put Linux
in a coffin and SCO’s claim that its code had been stolen was
‘silly’–an intellectual argument one step up from ‘just
because’

“Of course, there is nothing silly about the situation. This is
a high-stakes game…”
