Australian IT: Open Source Debate Will Go Nowhere

“The wheel-spinning over open source in government is getting
too silly for words. Legislating that government IT managers use
open source software, or even that they give preference to open
source, is like legislating they buy software developed in C++, or
PCs made using just-in-time manufacturing methods, or applications
that come in a green box: it is meaningless at the coalface, where
an open source solution may be perfect for the job, or downright
wrong…

“Any government IT manager who does not make each and every
decision on all factors in the equation: functionality, quality,
support, cost, scalability, compatibility, and everything else, is
not doing his or her job. Frankly, if they did anything else they
should get the sack.

“In the end, most Australian governments probably won’t
legislate for, or against, open source software…”
