Don’t tell the boss but the programmers’ pet, Linux, is
running the shop. And it seems Windows 2000 will be the
loser.

“Linux is starting to emerge from the skunkworks, running some
of Australia’s high-profile websites – albeit in stealth mode.

“Not yet accepted as a standard operating environment, Linux is
nonetheless running about 14,000 local web servers, according to
Netcraft. These include some of the busiest – Telstra’s White and
Yellow Pages, Travel.com.au, Centrebet, Corporate Express, Tribe
and several News Limited (publisher of The Australian) such as
news.com.au and afl.com.au.”

“Large corporates using Linux often do not inform customers or
shareholders of its use, says Michael Ciavarella, director of Linux
consulting and training firm Cybersource. “They’re still a little
bit afraid of going off the mainstream….”

“In the past two years, Linux has steadily eaten away at the
installed base of Windows NT and Unix servers and has been adopted
by many online start-ups as a cheaper, more stable, secure and
easily maintained alternative.”
