Australian IT: Torvalds a Coup for Linux Locals

“A penguin-suited Linus Torvalds has shirked the huge commercial
machinations of New York’s LinuxWorld to attend the smaller and
altogether friendlier linux.conf.au in Perth.

“Mr Torvalds made an appearance at the welcoming address for
Australia’s annual Linux conference today dressed as Linux icon
Tux, but for the rest of the conference the open source celebrity
will be just another delegate at the University of Western
Australia, attending sessions and lectures and talking to fellow
Linux developers from Australia and overseas.

“With about 400 delegates–mostly technical types who are
heavily involved in the close knit open source
‘community’–Linux.conf.au is a long way from LinuxWorld. The New
York trade show is expecting about 17,000 attendees, and is full of
booths from IT giants such as IBM, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett
Packard–which is bringing in celebrities from The Sopranos–and
even Microsoft…”
