BSD Today: Installing, configuring and using HylaFAX

“This article covers the installation and configuration of
HylaFAX 4.1 beta 2 on a FreeBSD 4.2 system with an external Zoom
FaxModem attached. These basic ideas should be applicable to other
platforms. My fax requirements are relatively simple requiring a
single computer which can receive and occasionally send faxes. I
was able to configure HylaFAX to meet my needs with only a little
bit of difficulty.”

“HylaFAX is a software package which allows the sending and
receiving facsimiles, polled retrieval of facsimiles, shared data
usage of a modem, and the sending of alpha-numeric pages. Outgoing
faxes can be in any format and they are automatically converted to
a form suitable for transmission. Incoming faxes are stored as TIFF
files and can be automatically delivered by mail or printed.”

“The software is structured around a client-server architecture.
Fax modems may reside on a single machine on a network and clients
can submit outbound jobs from any machine that can communicate with
the machine on which the modems reside. An access control mechanism
is included to control which users on which machines may access a
server. Clients and servers communicate using publicly specified
protocols: for facsimile, the HylaFAX Client-Server Protocol; and
for alpha-numeric pages, the Simple Network Paging Protocol (SNPP)
specified by RFC 1861.”
