“According to TeraSolutions, the FreeBSD-powered
ftp.freesoftware.com FTP server has surpassed a milestone of two
terabytes of files downloaded per day from a single server machine.
This milestone was set last week after the simultaneous releases of
FreeBSD 4.1.1 and Red Hat Linux 7.0.”
“As far as TeraSolutions knows, the previous record was 1.39TB
of downloads from ftp.cdrom.com in May 1999. According to the
www.freesoftware.com website, the freesoftware.com ftp server hosts
the archive of free software collections which were previously
hosted on the ftp.cdrom.com server.”
“‘Since there is no official ranking for most bytes downloaded
in a day, we can’t say with certainty that we hold the record,’
said David Greenman, TeraSolutions co-founder and president.
‘However, I am familiar with all of the major FTP archives in the
world, and I can say with certainty that no other server even comes
close. One of the largest sunsite servers set a .5TB record last
week, but that’s nothing compared to our 2TB.'”
