Canada Computes: Computer builders vie for dominance with Internet-only devices

Internet service providers (ISPs) and software firms are jumping on
the Internet appliance bandwagon, too.”

“But there’s no guarantee this bandwagon will go anywhere.”

“For one thing, do we need a single-minded computer at home?
After all, Canada is a seriously connected country. Some houses
hold more than one computer already.”

The manufacturers say consumers want the convenience an
Internet appliance brings. For example, Gateway, a custom computer
builder, is billing its upcoming product as a “room specific”
device. An Internet appliance in the kitchen means easy access to
recipes published on the World Wide Web.
