Canonical is making its own display server for Ubuntu, called Mir. The Ubuntu developers are also working on the next iteration of Unity, which is at the moment available only on the mobile platform, but it seems that it’s now a lot closer to being integrated successfully on the desktop. The Ubuntu developers have been accused of fragmenting the community with their Mir display server, but they continued their work uninterrupted. They initially planned to release Mir in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr), but that plan fell through when they realized they were not going to be ready in time.
